First Lines Friday [12]

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

I just recently reread this and it was just as touching as when I first read this. For some reason, I have not read many of this author's works since, so I went to BMV and bought a bunch. :'D

Can you guess what the book is?

THE LINES

When I was seventeen, my life changed forever.

I know that there are people who wonder about me when I say this. They look at me strangely as if trying to fathom what could have happened back then, though I seldom bother to explain. Because I've lived here for most of my life, I don't feel that I have to unless it's on my own terms, and that would take more time than most people are willing to give me.

Lara Jean didn’t expect to really fall for Peter.

She and Peter were just pretending. Except suddenly they weren’t. Now Lara Jean is more confused than ever.
When another boy from her past returns to her life, Lara Jean’s feelings for him return too. Can a girl be in love with two boys at once?

In this charming and heartfelt sequel to the New York Times bestseller To All the Boys I've Loved Before, we see first love through the eyes of the unforgettable Lara Jean. Love is never easy, but maybe that’s part of what makes it so amazing.
Note: Because this is the second book of a series, there WILL be To All the Boys I've Loved Before spoilers in this review. DO NOT read this review if you have not yet read the first book ... you have been warned.

This review is so long overdue. I read this all the way back in 2016, which seems oh so very far away. But, I just had to write this review because the book so freaking good, and I need to recommend it to EVERYBODY.

THE LINES
My hand shakes as I brace myself against the brick wall. Rain falls cold and sharp against my skin, from a sky I've never seen before. It's hard to catch my breath, to get any sense of where I am. All I know is that the Firebird worked. It hangs around my neck, still glowing with the heat of the journey.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created by The Broke and The Bookish.
Springtime always makes me want to read contemporary and romance. I suppose it's the freshness of the air, and the heavy rain outside that makes me want to curl up under covers and read a nice love story. Here are ten books I'm planning to read this spring, composed of mostly--you guessed it-- romance novels.

Book Haul | Almost Spring Book Outlet Buys

Hello friends! The weather here in Canada is fluctuating like crazy, so even though winter's supposed to be on it's way to gone, it doesn't feel like it. But at least I have these books here to keep me company in the warmth of my house! I bought these books from Book Outlet all the way back in January, but haven't had the time to haul them until now.

I picked up a bunch of books I've been wanting to read for a while now, as well as a select few that I've read but wanted for my library. Without further ado, here are the latest additions to my collection.

This book is a classic I've been reading for my English class. Despite the general dread surrounding the independent novel study unit, I actually like that we are "forced" to read these books, because otherwise, I might never pick them up, depriving myself of these great stories.

THE LINES

The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn.

Seventeen-year-old Chelsea Knowles is surrounded by the privileged. Michael Kors gym bags and designer shoes are part of her daily scene, but the talented cheerleader has a secret: she and her dad can barely pay the bills. Broken by his wife walking out on their family, Chelsea’s father ignores his responsibilities. Between cheer costs, grocery bills, electricity, and other regular financial burdens, it’s no surprise when a cut-off notice arrives in the mail. Chelsea knows it’ll be up to her to keep the lights on.

With the deck stacked against her, Chelsea decides to bet their future on the dubious poker knowledge she learned from her father before he gave up on parenting. Nervous but determined, Chelsea heads to a casino with very little security and wins big. Thrilled by her win, she’s quickly drawn to the casino again and again. She risks it all, especially when the attractive, young pit boss takes an interest in her.

Chelsea’s life, no longer filled with cheerleading, school, and hanging out with her friends, is now consumed by smoky casino floors and the ups and downs of a gambler’s life. True gamblers know when to fold, but Chelsea keeps betting long after her needs are met. The complicated web of lies soon begins to spin out of control, threatening to expose everything. Will someone see through her bluff?
